Normal respiratory rate in newborns may be as low as 15 breaths per minute. By 1 day of life, respiratory rate increases to about 20 to 30 breaths per minute. Manipulation of the genitalia or umbilicus may cause an increase in respiratory rate. Respiratory rate is the same as that in adults by 4 weeks of age.
